October 15, 2000- The American Dream Turns Into A Nightmare

The American Dream turns into a Nighmare

While the poor of Mexico climb border fences and swim rivers to gain access to the American dream, for many US citizens the dream has turned into a nightmare. Americans are "voting with their feet," says attorney Denis A. Kleinfeld, searching for havens anywhere in the world where they will be free from the tax snoops' tentacles that delve into every area of society in the USA.

He recalls the "feeling of extraordinary fright" he experienced after attending a top level conference on "money laundering, offshore investments and international financial crimes". Speakers included officials from the US Treasury, the Federal Reserve, the US Attorney's Office, plus special guests from Scotland Yard.

According to this Miami lawyer, repressive tax laws and an epidemic of potentially ruinous litigation means that legislation no longer has the support of the overwhelming majority which is necessary for a free nation to function. Add to this factor an increase in violence and drug abuse, plus a permanent underclass of people who feel excluded from the rich society portrayed on television, and you have a time bomb ticking away which if unchecked will lead to a nightmare collapse of the American social fabric. Instead of taking decisive action to eliminate poverty and drug dependence at source, successive US governments have imposed anti-money-laundering laws, supposedly to target drug traffickers, which take away the basic rights and freedoms of ordinary citizens.

These include the right to banking secrecy and the freedom of a citizen to transfer legitimately earned money to the bank account of his or her choice, anywhere in the world, without having to justify the transaction to some faceless bureaucrat. Banks must by law act as unpaid agents of a government which spies on its own citizens. Meanwhile the narcotics business is thriving, and the vast majority of drug barons find other ways to transfer their cash without it ever touching US banks. The only people normally caught in the net are ordinary citizens, who are now considered guilty of money laundering if unable to justify innocent day-to-day transactions. Financial institutions are obliged to input vast amounts of confidential, personal information about their clients into databases, so that the computer can throw out any "suspicious" pattern, to be handed over to tax grabbers and public prosecutors.

The Wall Street Journal reports "people of all ages have abandoned their free spending ways of the 1980s in favour of frugality - and of the stock market". This is a sign that millions of Americans are fearful of what the future will bring, and are attempting to provide them with an economic safety net. Denis Kleinfeld calls this "a curious paradox", while non Americans "pay to be smuggled in freighters or just come as tourists and stay". A more accurate description might be a warning for the future. Any US resident with significant assets should aim to transfer as much as possible safely out of the reach of the tax police, while this option is still available. A financial crisis in the USA could result in the overnight imposition of regulations making any unauthorized transfer of funds out of the country a criminal offence

The Bumper Book of Bank Applications covers prestige jurisdictions like Austria, Luxembourg and Switzerland, through to more remote havens such as St Vincent and the Grenadines. Three separate banks from the up-and-coming haven of Latvia are included, together with recommendations and background information. Although the book contains only applications for personal accounts, information is also contained on how to open corporate bank accounts at many of these banks.

Are any additional fees payable to open accounts? You will be in direct contact with the account opening banks. Although a few do charge for account opening, most do not. Credit cards etc. usually incur annual fees. However there is absolutely no 'intermediary' charge for using these application forms.

How do I know the banks listed are the best?

The editors are offshore professionals who spend all day every day opening bank accounts for people, and they have carefully selected the listed banks as those which are the most professional, customer driven organizations. Background information on the banks is included so you are in an informed position to make your own assessments.

How long should I allow for delivery?

Please allow 28 days for airmail delivery. If your order is urgent it can be shipped by DHL within 7 days for an extra fee.

Are these accounts available to USA residents?

Some banks will not deal with USA addresses. However, there are plenty that will, and there are easy ways around this rule even for those that say they won't. For a nominal fee mail can be routed through a drop in a foreign country, or you can simply use the bank's "hold mail" facility.
